State Route 53 @ Whitney Mountain
City: Steel
State: AL
Owner: Alabama Department of Transportation
General Contractor: E.O. Byars Construction
Project Description:
Schnabel Foundation Company was the design-build contractor for the first permanent soil nail wall constructed for the Alabama DOT. The wall was an integral part of the correction of an ongoing landslide which caused the loss of a portion of US 231 in northeast Alabama.
The job, which consisted of 40,992 sf of permanent reinforced shotcrete, 850 soil nails and 225 rock bolts, was completed in just three months. However, the real success is that the Alabama DOT is now confident in the use of permanent soil nails in their future projects.
