The Station Place Building Three project, located just a few feet behind Union Station, will provide 529,000 sf of office space in the heart of the US Capital. Station Place is the largest private office development in the District of Columbia. With three levels of parking and one office level below grade, as well as ten levels of office space above grade, the support of excavation had to cope with challenges like the AMTRAK railroad yard adjacent to the west side, a multi-lane bridge to the north side and an active access ramp crossing the future excavation at grade elevation.
Schnabel Foundation Company started the $3.0M support of excavation (SOE) in September 2006. In June 2007, eight months later, the first footer was poured. A total of 51,000 sf of lagging and 450 tiebacks were installed. The SOE was installed on wall-line to a depth of 60 ft. Pre-drilled soldier piles and a four tier tieback system provided the horizontal support for the excavation. In addition, the existing access ramp was supported with an intricate steel framework.
