Mahalani Street Extension

City: Wailuku

State: HI

Owner: Hawaii Public Works

General Contractor: Goodfellow Brothers

Project Description:

The widening of Mahalani Street was complicated by a cemetery adjacent to the roadway.  Excavation or construction of any portion of the wall within the limits of the cemetery was not permitted.  A conventional cast-in-place wall would have required an L-shaped wall, with the wall toe below the roadway, and temporary shoring to protect the cemetery.  This option would have been prohibitively expensive in large part to the major utility re-location work that would have been required to allow construction of the wall toe below the roadway.

As a contract alternative, Schnabel Foundation Company designed and constructed a permanent drilled-in soldier pile-and-tieback wall with a shotcrete facing.  The wall, approximately 500 ft long and up to 18 ft high, was constructed in a dune sand formation.  The work was further complicated by the presence of an existing rubble wall along the tieback wall alignment.  The work was completed ahead of schedule and eliminated the need for the major utility re-location that would have been required by the original design.
