The 2nd and Santa Clara project is a mixed-use development, as part of the city-wide efforts to revitalize downtown San Jose, CA. Since the development consisted of two levels of underground parking, Schnabel Foundation Company designed and safely constructed a 20,000 sf shoring and underpinning system on a small site with a high groundwater table, with existing structures in close proximity to the excavation on two sides.
City streets and newly constructed hardscape were present on the other two sides of the site. Thus, all four sides required a stiff shoring system in order to meet stringent performance requirements. Schnabel incorporated a soldier beam and lagging shoring system with over 200 tiebacks in two rows.
To support an existing 3-story masonry building, Schnabel utilized slant pile underpinning. A tieback and shotcrete wale system was also incorporated to support and maintain continuous access of a steel fire exit stairwell where access for a vertical drill rig was not possible. Both the underpinning and the shoring performed well within the required tolerances.
