Project Description:
A two-sided excavation into a hillside was required for a new parking structure at the Valley View Casino in Valley Center, CA. For cuts up to approximately 35 ft in height, Schnabel Foundation Company designed and constructed a permanent soil nail wall for the earth retention system.
The 17,250 sf wall consisted of over 700 nails, with over 18,000 lf of drilling, including drilling through an area of previous backfill containing large boulders. Prior to soil nailing, non-cohesive decomposed granite fill was placed, compacted and treated with a liquid enzyme to create a cohesive zone, facilitating open-hole drilling and sufficient standup time for the vertical cuts.
