Project Description:
Jet grouting was used for a variety of purposes during the construction of an underground addition to one of Boston’s most historic museums. These purposes included underpinning, water cutoff, and ground improvement. The construction of the addition required a 10 ft deep excavation next to an existing masonry building. The existing building foundations were strip footings bearing on medium dense silty sands underlain by Boston Blue Clay. The water table was only a few feet below the footings.
Underpinning and water cutoff was provided by a continuous row of overlapping jet grout columns installed along the perimeter of the excavation. The jet grout columns extended from the bottom of the footing to 10 ft into the clay. Bracing provided lateral support to the wall.
Ground improvement was provided by a grid of jet grout columns installed in the interior of the excavation. These columns extended 10 ft below the new foundation slab. The columns increased the bearing capacity of the ground in anticipation of the new structure.
Over 4,000 LF of jet grouting was installed on this project.
