Florida Hospital South Bed Tower

City: Orlando

State: FL

Owner: FL Hospital Design & Construction

General Contractor: Brasfield & Gorrie

Project Description:

The new South Bed Tower at FL Hospital required an 18 to 32 ft deep excavation for construction of the five (5) ft thick mat foundation.  To provide the required support of the adjacent roadways and utilities, Schnabel Foundation Company designed and built an earth retention system consisting of tiedback soldier beams and wood lagging.

Due to concerns over vibrations and noise for the adjacent hospital facilities, the soldier beams were set in holes drilled with a 24 inch diameter continuous flight auger and backfilled with low strength flowable fill.  Three (3) inch thick mixed hardwood lagging supported the earth between the soldier beams.  Lateral support of the soldier beams was provided by a single row of rotary pressure-injected tiebacks.  Deep wells were installed (by others) around the perimeter of the excavation to lower the groundwater level within the sandy soils to at least two (2) ft below the bottom of mat elevation.

In summary, the following earth retention quantities were installed:
·         1,310 lf of retention system
·         159 drill-set soldier beams
·         29,000 sf of lagging
·         159 pressure-injected tiebacks

The earth retention system was completed within budget and on schedule so that the huge mat foundation pour could proceed as planned.
