Project Description:
This portion of US 6, near Soldier Summit, UT, has been failing due to a landslide that was continually moving below the roadway. The landslide had been causing continuous maintenance and safety concerns for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) for more than 20 years.
UDOT issued a Request for Design Build Proposals for the repair and stabilization of the landslide. Schnabel Foundation Company was selected as the Design Build Contractor for the project. The stabilization system consisted of permanent drilled soldier beams with temporary wood lagging and two tiers of tiebacks and a permanent structural shotcrete facing.
The project was completed safely, on budget and with only one change order due to traffic striping that had to occur outside the project limits.
The project was awarded the Contractor of the Year by UDOT in 1999.
