Chaffee Road over I-1-
City: Orlando
State: FL
Owner: Florida DOT
General Contractor: Hubbard Construction Company
Project Description:
An earth retaining wall system was required along the west side of Chaffee Rd in order to stage the traffic and allow construction of a new, wider bridge over I-10. Two retention walls were required, one 120 LF long wall on the north side of I-10 with a maximum height of 25 FT, and another 400 LF long wall on the south side with an overall height of 25 FT. The original contract drawings showed steel sheetpiling walls with tiebacks and walers. Often times it is very difficult to get steel sheetpiling walls down to the required tip elevation on the contract drawings because of hard driving conditions. Schnabel Foundation Company designed and built an alternate design that replaced the steel sheet piling and instead used steel soldier beams, wood lagging, walers, and tiebacks. This alternate design saved valuable time and money, which were critical to the overall completion of the project.
