Baker Library

City: Boston

State: MA

Owner: Harvard Business School

General Contractor: James W. Flett

Project Description:

Schnabel Foundation Company was contracted to design and install around 25,000 SF of soil mixed wall for an addition to the Baker Library at Harvard Business School.  The soil mixed wall served a dual purpose as both temporary excavation support and a permanent groundwater cutoff.

The soil mixed wall extended around the entire 650-foot perimeter of the proposed addition and had a design height of up to 28 feet.  The deep mixed wall extended to a total depth of up to 44 feet to allow for a more effective groundwater cutoff.  The successful use of the Design-Build Soil Mixed wall allowed excavation to take place under relatively dry conditions and all but eliminated movements of the immediately adjacent historic Baker Library.
