Schnabel was contracted by general contractor Robin and Morton to stabilize the hospital with jet grout columns prior to excavation. The design included 16 underpinning columns, 29 soldier beam columns, and 4 test columns. However, 3 of the soldier beam columns could not be installed due to an underground retaining wall. The columns ranged in depth from 12 to 35 feet. Bentonite was used in the jet grout mixture to achieve the required low strength.
