Databank ATL 5
Data Center

Location:

Atlanta, GA

Client:

Brasfield & Gorrie

Background

In 2024, DataBank began construction of its South Fulton Campus, including several data centers and a 180MW on-site substation. The first phase involved building ATL 5, the on-site substation, on a sloped site requiring stable excavation support.

Schnabel’s Solution

Schnabel provided permanent excavation support by cutting into the slope and installing a site wall using over 300 permanent soil nails and more than 9,000 square feet of shotcrete bump wall. During construction, Schnabel addressed large subsurface boulders and voids behind the wall by increasing wall thickness and applying additional shotcrete.

Results

The project was completed ahead of schedule, providing a stable platform for ongoing construction, helping multiple subcontractors stay on schedule. Schnabel’s efforts supported the early phase of the campus, contributing to economic growth, new jobs, and strengthening Atlanta’s data center hub.

Data Center

Background

Amazon Data Services planned a two-building data center campus in Stafford County, VA, including a new substation to provide stable, reliable power. Northern Virginia continues to grow as a major hub for data centers, driving the need for rapid construction.

Schnabel’s Solution

Schnabel was contracted to provide specialized earth retention services for two key walls, installing a permanent shoring system with shotcrete facing and a sound wall. The work included soldier beams, lagging, tiebacks, and extensive shotcrete facings. Schnabel completed the first phase safely and ahead of schedule earning additional work for two more shotcrete wall facings and future headquarters work for HITT.

Results

Through close coordination with the client, Schnabel maintained a fast-paced schedule, ensuring work progressed efficiently and without delays
