Real-World Results in Waterfront, Dam, and Levee Projects
Proven Expertise in Critical Infrastructure
Schnabel has delivered geotechnical solutions for many of the country’s most demanding waterfront, port, and levee infrastructure projects. Here’s a look at some of our impactful work:
Interstate 275/State Route 93
Location:
Tampa Bay, FL
Client:
Ebsary Foundation
Company
Background
FDOT is undertaking a multi-phase project along I-275 over Old Tampa Bay, including the new Howard Franklin Bridge, road expansions, and new pedestrian/cycling paths. This work will improve connectivity and reduce congestion in the growing Tampa Bay region.
Schnabel’s Solution
Schnabel was contracted to provide earth retention services for 5,500 feet of newly reclaimed land. Schnabel installed over 1,100 pairs of sheet piles and 534 tiebacks, supported by extensive testing.
Results
Schnabel delivered the project three months ahead of schedule, enabling FDOT to move forward with new lanes and pedestrian pathways to enhance mobility across Tampa Bay.
Panbowl Lake (KYTC)
Location:
Jackson, KY
Client:
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC)
Background
severe flooding in Jackson, KY elevated the Kentucky River and Panbowl Lake to dangerous levels, nearly overtopping the Panbowl Lake Dam, which also supports Highway 15. With over 12,000 vehicles crossing daily, KYTC needed an urgent solution to stabilize the dam and prepare for future highway expansion.
Schnabel’s Solution
Schnabel served as General Contractor to design and install a permanent secant pile water cutoff wall. The team drilled more than 150 shafts (7,505 linear feet), each 1,180mm in diameter and up to 53 feet deep. Core drilling, permeability checks, and CSL testing ensured structural integrity and water cutoff performance.
Results
Schnabel completed the secant pile cutoff wall ahead of schedule, under budget, and with zero safety incidents. The project safeguards the community from future flooding risks while supporting critical infrastructure improvements along Highway 15.
