Excavation shoring systems are critical for ensuring the stability of excavation sites, preventing potential risks to surrounding infrastructure. Schnabel’s specialized excavation support solutions (ESS) are tailored to address the wide range of subsurface conditions found across the United States.

As a leader in Geostructural Design & Construction, Schnabel combines years of experience and technical know-how to deliver reliable excavation support systems that meet the unique needs of your project.

EXCAVATION SUPPORT SYSTEM SOLUTIONS

Excavation support systems (ESSs), commonly referred to as shoring, play a crucial role in stabilizing the ground behind an excavation. These systems are engineered to withstand a variety of forces, including groundwater pressure, building loads, construction traffic, roadways, railroads, and other types of surcharge loads.

Whether temporary or permanent, excavation shoring serves as a vital support mechanism. Temporary shoring is typically used to hold the excavation open during construction until a new structure is completed, while permanent excavation shoring is designed to offer long-term support. Permanent solutions differ from their temporary counterparts by incorporating materials resistant to long-term corrosion, ensuring durability and protection over time.

The selection of the right excavation shoring system depends on various factors, such as soil conditions, required stiffness, and whether a groundwater cutoff is necessary. An experienced excavation support contractor can assess these factors and recommend the optimal system for your project.

Schnabel offers a wide range of excavation support system solutions, including soldier piles and lagging, soil nailing, secant/tangent piles, deep soil mix walls, and sheet pile walls. Depending on the project, lateral support for the system can be achieved using tiebacks, soil nails, braces, or cantilevered vertical elements. With extensive experience in designing and constructing the latest excavation support systems used across the United States, Schnabel is equipped to handle your project’s unique needs with precision and expertise.

EXCAVATION SUPPORT SYSTEM CASE STUDIES

Excavation Support

Capitol Crossing | Washington D.C.

Schnabel designed and installed over 130,000 square feet of excavation support for the Capitol Crossing project in Washington, DC for client Balfour Beatty Construction. Several sensitive structures including the Holy Rosary Church, the Casa Italiana, and a modern office building were supported by a combination of conventional hand-dug underpinning pits, bracket piles, and stiff SASM walls.

Excavation Support

Reston Row East Promenade Garage | Reston, VA

Schnabel designed and installed a temporary excavation support system for client Davis Construction to facilitate the construction of five-level underground parking garages. In this project, Schnabel installed 120,000 SF of sheeting with over 1,000 temporary tiebacks. The project which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic was completed safely, on budget, and to the client’s content.

The Capitol Crossing project was one of the most complicated excavation shoring jobs in Schnabel’s history. The use of stiff single auger soil mix SASM walls based on deflection-based design resulted in the successful performance of the support of excavation adjacent to some historic and modern structures.
