EXCAVATION SUPPORT SOLUTION
As a recognized leader in earth-retention systems and advanced specialty foundations, Schnabel offers dependable excavation support solutions designed to meet the demands of diverse environments.
Excavation support systems are crucial for stabilizing the sides of an excavation, ensuring that nearby structures, streets, and utilities remain undisturbed during the construction process.
Schnabel delivers customized excavation support solutions (ESS) to address the wide range of subsurface conditions found across the United States.
With extensive expertise as a top Geostructural Design & Construction contractor, Schnabel ensures your project receives a reliable and efficient excavation support system tailored to its unique requirements.
EXCAVATION SUPPORT SYSTEM SOLUTIONS
Excavation support systems (ESSs), often referred to as shoring, are essential for stabilizing the ground behind an excavation. These systems are engineered to withstand various pressures, including groundwater forces, loads from nearby buildings, traffic, roadways, railroads, and other types of surcharge loads.
Excavation shoring can serve as a temporary solution to support the excavation until construction of a new structure is completed. In some cases, these systems are also designed to provide permanent support. Permanent excavation support solutions differ from temporary systems in that they often include components resistant to long-term corrosion, ensuring durability over time.
Choosing the right excavation support solution depends on several factors such as soil conditions, the required level of stiffness, and whether a groundwater barrier is necessary.
Schnabel offers a range of excavation support solutions tailored to your project, including soldier piles and lagging, soil nailing, secant/tangent piles, deep soil mix walls, and sheet pile walls. Lateral support for these systems can be achieved using tiebacks, soil nails, braces, or by designing vertical shoring elements to cantilever. With extensive experience in the design and construction of these systems across the U.S., Schnabel is equipped to provide the most effective solution for your excavation needs.

We are consistently dedicated to safeguarding both our employees and clients from any avoidable risks.
EXCAVATION SUPPORT SYSTEM CASE STUDIES
Capitol Crossing | Washington D.C.
Schnabel designed and installed over 130,000 square feet of excavation support for the Capitol Crossing project in Washington, DC for client Balfour Beatty Construction. Several sensitive structures including the Holy Rosary Church, the Casa Italiana, and a modern office building were supported by a combination of conventional hand-dug underpinning pits, bracket piles, and stiff SASM walls.
Reston Row East Promenade Garage | Reston, VA
Schnabel designed and installed a temporary excavation support system for client Davis Construction to facilitate the construction of five-level underground parking garages. In this project, Schnabel installed 120,000 SF of sheeting with over 1,000 temporary tiebacks. The project which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic was completed safely, on budget, and to the client’s content.
The Capitol Crossing project was one of the most complicated excavation shoring jobs in Schnabel’s history. The use of stiff single auger soil mix SASM walls based on deflection-based design resulted in the successful performance of the support of excavation adjacent to some historic and modern structures.
