JET GROUTING CONTRACTORS

As one of the premier jet grouting contractors in the nation, Schnabel offers top-tier jet grouting solutions designed to address complex operational challenges and help clients reach their construction objectives.

Jet grouting is a highly effective method for mitigating groundwater infiltration into subterranean structures. It’s also an ideal solution for underpinning existing foundations and providing support during excavation processes.

Specializing in cement-stabilized soil techniques, we utilize jet grouting to enhance groundwater control and provide robust foundation support.

With decades of hands-on experience, Schnabel brings the expertise needed to navigate the unique challenges of your jobsite, ensuring the successful completion of your project.

Jet Grouting Solutions for Enhanced Soil Stabilization

Jet grouting is a specialized technique used to mix soil with cement grout directly on-site to form a cement-stabilized soil column. When executed with rigorous quality control, this process significantly increases the soil’s strength while reducing its permeability. As a result, the modified soil becomes an engineered material that is ideal for foundation support and groundwater management. Common applications of jet grouting include underpinning existing structures and constructing cutoff walls to provide excavation support.

The process involves drilling a small-diameter pipe—usually around 4 inches in diameter—down to the required treatment depth. Once the desired depth is reached, jet grouting contractors inject high-pressure cement grout, typically at 6,000 psi, through ports at the bottom of the pipe. As the pipe is rotated and withdrawn, it creates a circular column of treated soil. The rate at which the pipe is withdrawn can be adjusted to control the diameter of the columns. These columns are strategically placed to provide vertical support, or they can overlap to form barriers that control the horizontal movement of weak soil and groundwater.

Jet grouting is especially effective when dealing with subsurface conditions that include existing utilities or other buried obstructions. The small-diameter pipe can maneuver between these obstacles, enabling contractors to create large-diameter columns beneath them for effective soil stabilization.

JET GROUTING CASE STUDIES

Lower Olentangy Tunnel Project | Columbus, OH

Granite Construction, the general contractor, hired Schnabel for jet grouting along the 3.2-mile tunnel. Grouting was planned at 4 tunnel shafts for TBM break-in and break-out, 12 Safe Haven sites for cutterhead replacement, and 5 locations where a water main crosses the TBM alignment. Despite project challenges, Schnabel completed the work ahead of schedule.

Jet Grouting

J Avenue Water Treatment Plant | Cedar Rapid, IA

Schnabel installed 67 jet grout columns to support the expansion of the J Avenue water treatment plant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This project required an excavation adjacent to an existing structure. The continuous wall of jet grout columns was successful in retaining the soil and water behind the wall and no measurable settlement of the tank structure occurred.

The Minneapolis Children’s Hospital project was Schnabel’s first application of jet grouting to underpin an existing structure in lieu of traditional hand-dug underpinning pits. The project team was very pleased with the performance of the jet grout underpinning system.
