I-66 Soil Nail Walls

Background

The I-66 Soil Nail Walls were part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project in Fairfax, Virginia — a $3.7 billion public-private partnership led by VDOT with Ferrovial-Allen Meyers (FAM) as the construction partner. The overall project aimed to relieve congestion and provide new travel options across a 23-mile stretch of I-66, including new express lanes, park-and-ride spaces, improved bus services, interchange upgrades, and 11 miles of new bike trails.

Schnabel’s Solution

Schnabel was contracted by FAM Construction to construct two permanent soil nail walls that would enable the widening of eastbound I-66 and the installation of new express lanes.
RW-S2A-I66GE-1: ~13,000 SF wall, the first to be built.
RW-S2A-I66GE-5: ~60,000 SF wall, 2,400 LF long, started October 2020 and completed September 2021.
Both walls were built using soil nailing and shotcrete facing, providing durable and efficient earth retention in challenging conditions.

Results

Despite encountering difficult conditions — such as rock near the bottom of RW-S2A-I66GE-5 and cold weather requiring heated tents and blankets for shotcrete curing — Schnabel successfully completed both walls. The soil nail systems allowed FAM to safely widen the eastbound lanes and advance the overall I-66 improvement project on schedule, supporting one of Virginia’s largest infrastructure upgrades.
