Background

The Romeo Arm Interceptor project required the repair and stabilization of a deep sewer system. Oscar Renda contracted Schnabel to provide a secure shaft for tunnel access and excavation support to safely complete the repair work.

Schnabel’s Solution

Schnabel installed a 34.5-foot inside diameter secant pile shaft consisting of 60 overlapping secant piles ranging from 8 to 51 feet deep. Shallow piles followed the top radius of the tunnel, while deeper primary and secondary piles (38 ft and 51 ft) ensured basal stability. W21x182 wide flange steel sections were placed in secondary shafts for reinforcement.

Results

The secant pile shaft provided a stable, reinforced excavation for the deep sewer repair. Schnabel’s precise installation and reinforcement allowed the project to proceed safely and efficiently, supporting the structural integrity of the repaired sewer system.
