San Marcos River ARWA Tunnel Shafts

Background

Two circular access shafts were required for a water supply tunnel project along the San Marcos River. The shafts needed to provide safe and stable access for tunnel construction while navigating variable subsurface conditions and ensuring minimal disturbance to surrounding areas.

Schnabel’s Solution

Schnabel designed and constructed the shafts using overlapping secant piles filled with unreinforced concrete—42 piles to 69 ft for the launching shaft and 24 piles to 58 ft for the receiving shaft. Specialized Bauer drill rigs with 1180 mm casing ensured precise alignment and verticality, providing stable excavation support for tunnel construction.

Results

The secant pile shafts provided stable, safe access for tunnel construction and maintained structural integrity throughout excavation. Schnabel’s efficient installation minimized subsurface disturbance and ensured the project remained on schedule.
