PENITENCIA WATER TREATMENT PLANT | SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA

City: San Jose
State: California
Owner: Santa Clara Valley Water District
General Contractor: Kiewit Pacific

Project Description:
The Penitencia Water Treatment Plant site was originally built on an ancient landslide.  The site has poor subsurface conditions including shallow groundwater and soft soils which create localized areas of instability.

Schnabel designed and installed soil nails, soldier beams and lagging, and a secant pile wall to help facilitate construction of new structures at the facility.  In addition, 1,150 vertical linear feet of drilled piers were installed to contain a smaller slide that developed during construction.  Performing the work in difficult site conditions, Schnabel installed over 20,000 square feet of shoring that used over 600 soil nails and tiebacks.
