EXCAVATION SUPPORT SYSTEM SOLUTIONS
Excavation support systems (ESS), also referred to as excavation shoring, are essential for maintaining the integrity of the ground around an excavation site. These systems are specifically designed to bear the weight of the surrounding soil, resist groundwater pressure, and manage the loads from construction traffic, nearby buildings, roadways, railroads, and various surcharge pressures.
Excavation shoring is typically employed to temporarily stabilize an excavation during the construction process. However, in some cases, these systems are designed for permanent installation, offering long-term support. Permanent shoring solutions differ from temporary ones by incorporating materials and techniques that provide additional protection against long-term corrosion and wear.
The selection of the appropriate excavation shoring method depends on factors such as soil composition, required stability, and whether a groundwater barrier is necessary. The expertise of excavation shoring contractors ensures the right solution is implemented to meet the unique demands of each project.
At Schnabel, we specialize in a variety of excavation support systems, including soldier piles and lagging, soil nailing, secant/tangent piles, deep soil mix walls, and sheet pile walls. Our excavation shoring solutions are complemented by lateral support mechanisms like tiebacks, soil nails, braces, or cantilevered vertical elements. With years of experience designing and installing ESS across the United States, Schnabel is equipped to handle a diverse range of project requirements and deliver the best excavation shoring system for your needs.

We are unwavering in our commitment to safeguarding both our employees and clients from unnecessary risks.
EXCAVATION SUPPORT SYSTEM CASE STUDIES
Capitol Crossing | Washington D.C.
Schnabel designed and installed over 130,000 square feet of excavation support for the Capitol Crossing project in Washington, DC for client Balfour Beatty Construction. Several sensitive structures including the Holy Rosary Church, the Casa Italiana, and a modern office building were supported by a combination of conventional hand-dug underpinning pits, bracket piles, and stiff SASM walls.
Reston Row East Promenade Garage | Reston, VA
Schnabel designed and installed a temporary excavation support system for client Davis Construction to facilitate the construction of five-level underground parking garages. In this project, Schnabel installed 120,000 SF of sheeting with over 1,000 temporary tiebacks. The project which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic was completed safely, on budget, and to the client’s content.
The Capitol Crossing project was one of the most complicated excavation shoring jobs in Schnabel’s history. The use of stiff single auger soil mix SASM walls based on deflection-based design resulted in the successful performance of the support of excavation adjacent to some historic and modern structures.
