EXCAVATION SUPPORT SYSTEM SOLUTIONS

Excavation support systems (ESSs), commonly referred to as shoring, are essential for stabilizing the ground surrounding an excavation site. These systems are engineered to withstand various pressures, such as groundwater, building loads, traffic from construction vehicles, roadways, railroads, and other surcharge loads.

ESSs can be used either as temporary support until construction of a new structure is completed or as a permanent solution. Unlike temporary systems, permanent excavation support solutions are designed with materials that offer enhanced resistance to long-term corrosion, ensuring greater durability over time.

The ideal excavation support system for any given project is determined by a combination of factors including soil conditions, the required structural stiffness, and whether a groundwater cutoff is necessary.

Schnabel provides a comprehensive range of excavation support systems, including soldier piles and lagging, soil nailing, secant and tangent piles, deep soil mix walls, and sheet pile walls. Excavation Support

Capitol Crossing | Washington D.C.

Schnabel designed and installed over 130,000 square feet of excavation support for the Capitol Crossing project in Washington, DC for client Balfour Beatty Construction. Several sensitive structures including the Holy Rosary Church, the Casa Italiana, and a modern office building were supported by a combination of conventional hand-dug underpinning pits, bracket piles, and stiff SASM walls.

Reston Row East Promenade Garage | Reston, VA

Schnabel designed and installed a temporary excavation support system for client Davis Construction to facilitate the construction of five-level underground parking garages. In this project, Schnabel installed 120,000 SF of sheeting with over 1,000 temporary tiebacks. The project which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic was completed safely, on budget, and to the client’s content.

The Capitol Crossing project was one of the most complicated excavation shoring jobs in Schnabel’s history. The use of stiff single auger soil mix SASM walls based on deflection-based design resulted in the successful performance of the support of excavation adjacent to some historic and modern structures.
