LANDSLIDE STABILIZATION SOLUTIONS

Schnabel offers a comprehensive range of landslide stabilization solutions, tailored to address specific project needs and difficult environmental conditions. Our services include tiedback permanent walls, tiedback discrete structural elements, soldier piles, secant piles, and soil nailing, all designed to ensure long-lasting stability and control.

As a prominent Geostructural Design & Construction contractor, Schnabel has the experience and expertise necessary to deliver effective landslide repair and stabilization strategies, providing reliable solutions even in the most challenging terrains.

Landslide Stabilization Solutions

A landslide occurs when the forces acting on a soil mass surpass its internal resistance, causing the land to shift or move. Schnabel’s landslide stabilization solutions are designed to stop or prevent these movements, utilizing proven techniques such as tieback anchors, soldier piles, and micropiles to provide additional external resistance.

Tieback anchors are often the most effective and cost-efficient solution for landslide stabilization. When mass excavation isn’t feasible, or when drainage issues make soil difficult to treat, tieback anchors may be the only practical option. In some cases, a combination of tiebacks and other methods may be the best approach.

Tieback walls designed to prevent landslides work by boosting the resisting forces to achieve a specific safety factor. These walls can be positioned within the slope to apply force in the most effective direction and can be installed with minimal disruption to the site. The tiebacks anchor into solid soil or rock beneath the failure surface, ensuring stability.

In some instances, the forces from the tiebacks are transferred directly into the soil using discrete concrete elements instead of a full wall structure. Often, these elements are buried within the slope and the area is then re-vegetated to restore its original appearance.

With over 50 years of experience, Schnabel offers innovative and cost-effective landslide stabilization solutions. Contact our team today to learn more.

Landslide Stabilization Case Studies

Landslide Stabilization

Gallatin County Landslide Repair | Warsaw, KY

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) contracted Schnabel to reconstruct a 1.25-mile-long section of the U.S. 42 highway that has been prone to landslides. Schnabel successfully installed a tieback retaining wall to help stabilize the existing landslides, which allowed the highway to reopen five months ahead of schedule and just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Landslide Stabilization

Cal-Poly Landslide Stabilization | San Luis Obispo, CA

In 2017, a landslide on the Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo Campus caused an evacuation of the Fremont Dorm. Schnabel designed and built the earth retention system used to stabilize the slide and served as the general contractor for the project. This project received the 2023 CalGeo Project of the Year Award and the 2023 APWA Public Works Project of the Year Award.

Schnabel constructed a permanent tieback wall to stabilize an old landslide so that previously unusable land could be used to construct a new senior care facility. Schnabel worked closely with design consultant Cotton, Shires and Associates to produce a design that would stabilize a large slide close to numerous fault lines. This required deep soldier piles and high capacity tiebacks up to 150-foot long.
