BAKER LIBRARY | BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

City: Boston
State: Massachusetts
Owner: Harvard Business School
General Contractor: James W. Flett

Project Description:
Schnabel was contracted to design and install around 25,000 sf of soil mixed wall for an addition to the Baker Library at Harvard Business School. The soil mixed wall served a dual purpose as both temporary excavation support and a permanent groundwater cutoff.

The soil mixed wall extended around the entire 650-foot perimeter of the proposed addition and had a design height of up to 28 feet. The deep mixed wall extended to a total depth of up to 44 feet to allow for a more effective groundwater cutoff. The successful use of the Design-Build Soil Mixed wall allowed excavation to take place under relatively dry conditions and all but eliminated movements of the immediately adjacent historic Baker Library.
