MONSERATE SUBSTATION | FALLBROOK, CALIFORNIA

City: Fallbrook
State: California
Owner: San Diego Gas & Electric
General Contractor: San Diego Gas & Electric

Project Description:
This permanent soil nail wall with a sculpted and colored shotcrete facing was designed and built by Schnabel.  Excavation in the weathered rock was performed in 10 foot lifts to provide a bench wide enough to install the initial rows of rock nails.  To stabilize the cut, Schnabel installed approximately 295 corrosion protected nails from a drill mast mounted on a skid steer loader.

The rock excavation required only light mesh and a flash coat of shotcrete for temporary support.  When subgrade was reached a sculpted permanent shotcrete face was applied with a design thickness of 8 inches.  Finally, a drainage swale was installed at the top of the wall.
