4TH AVENUE JAIL | PHOENIX, ARIZONA

City: Phoenix
State: Arizona
Owner: Maricopa County
General Contractor: McCarthy

Project Description:
As part of an expansion to the existing jail, Schnabel designed and installed 34,300 square feet of temporary excavation support (shoring). The shoring consisted of steel soldier beams with timber lagging between. Lateral support for the shoring was provided by 118 pressure-injected tiebacks. A portion of the shoring was built using internal bracing, to facilitate excavation for a cut and cover tunnel connecting the new jail to the existing facility on the opposite side of the street.

In addition to shoring the tunnel area, Schnabel designed and constructed support for 17 existing utility crossings. The work was performed safely, ahead of schedule and under budget.
