USAMRIID Sterilization Plant

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers selected John C. Grimberg Co. of Rockville, Maryland to construct a $27 million steam sterilization plant at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland. Sited adjacent to the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) facility, the plant will utilize high temperature steam to sterilize liquid bio-waste from the USAMRIID laboratories at a capacity of 126,000 gallons per day.
Schnabel was the preferred bidder to construct a 35’ wide x 58’ long x 40’ deep internally braced soldier pile and lagging earth retention system, which included coring up to 55-foot deep drilled shafts through karst limestone. Lateral support for the shoring consisted of two tiers of internal diagonal braces supporting outlooker piles connected to a continuous wale.
Since the 3-foot thick basement walls were required to be monolithically poured, block-outs for pile connections were not allowed, making it necessary to attach a ring of internal bracing to each lift after concrete was poured & removing the internal bracing at that lift attached to shoring prior to the next pour until the foundation was poured up to grade.
The project consisted of over 1,100 lineal feet of drilling and approximately 9,000 square feet of shoring.
